Excerpt from an interview with the Peruvian Poet Leo Zelada
ResponderBorrarAnd Vallejo?
Larrea often talked about César Vallejo during the Córdoba interviews. I found it fruitful to study Larrea’s work on him in the voluminous magazine he published, Aula Vallejo. It helped me to understand Larrea’s thinking. Spending time in Vallejo’s world like this – Larrea often talked and wrote about Vallejo’s life, particularly their years together in Paris – enabled me to begin to understand the Peruvian’s poetry. I was deeply affected by the harshness of Vallejo’s life, his suffering and his commitment to Humanity evident in his writing. Later I had the wonderful opportunity to lecture on both Vallejo and Larrea at Middlesex University, London. The lecture preparation took me deeper into Vallejo’s work. Vallejo became a presence in my own intellectual and imaginative life. In the way that I often refer to in my poetry, that Dylan Thomas, I feel, accompanies me, sometimes when I am writing a poem, so Vallejo – the image I have of him - can appear in my imagination. His imagined presence is comforting and inspiring. No doubt these ‘visions’ are inspired by the near or partial recollection of a line from one of his poems. For me Vallejo, like Dylan Thomas, is the example of a poet who dedicates himself fully to poetry without considering the advantages or disadvantages the writing of a poem brings. They have integrity. I think it was Vernon Watkins who commented on the dedication Dylan showed to the art and the craft of poetry.
